Strengthening the Pedagogical Content Knowledge in PAV: PCK module for student teachers and teachers

Project General Subjects (PAV) is a complex subject to teach. It is an integrated course that combines content from the following diverse disciplines:

  • Dutch,
  • math,
  • natural sciences including STEM,
  • citizenship,
  • historical and spatial awareness.

The subject requires a functional interpretation and is offered to students with a labor market finality. All this requires the PAV teacher to have solid subject-specific, general pedagogical-didactic and subject-didactic know-how.

This pilot project aims to sharpen that knowledge through seven modules. The modules were created based on source research:

  • literature on PCK and PAV;
  • analysis of learning materials from various learning environments for the three levels of secondary education in PAV;
  • visits to various PAV professional groups;
  • analysis of the educational views and practices about PCK of (student) teachers and teacher trainers PAV

This contribution introduces (future) PAV teachers to PAV teaching didactics. It offers the following seven modules for PAV teachers: one subject-didactic PAV module, and six subject-specific modules, one for each key competency that can be involved in PAV. Each of the modules is flanked by all kinds of illustrative and practice material.

We also offer a rubric to evaluate the quality of PAV learning environments at a glance, and a toolkit that provides concrete tools to support the design of powerful learning environments in PAV.
