Guide to Preventing Violent Extremism

UNESCO's Global Citizenship Education Program presents a first guide to help teachers work on the prevention of violent extremism. The guide helps teachers to create a classroom climate that is inclusive and fruitful for respectful dialogue, open debate and critical thinking. The publication also references resources to better understand the phenomenon of violent extremism and answers frequently asked questions.

Whether or not discussions about violent extremism were pre-planned, it is important that the conversation is channeled in order to sharpen students' skills that also enable them to better participate in civic life as informed citizens in general. This means that the information exchanged during the conversations, and the way the conversation is handled, contribute to the development of skills, attitudes and behaviors that promote mutual respect, critical thinking and a sense of belonging to a common humanity.

The guide will be supplemented by a second publication specifically aimed at policy makers in ministries of education. This publication will be published in September 2016 and will provide tools to address the drivers of violent extremism in a holistic and pragmatic way in education.

The guide is UNESCO's first contribution to the implementation of the United Nations Secretary-General's Action Plan for the Prevention of Violent Extremism.
