Op school aan de slag met virtuele realiteit
In de jaren zestig werd de eerste VR-bril ontwikkeld. De technologie werd toen al gebruikt in de ruimtevaart. Na de smartphone- en tabletrevolutie in het onderwijs zeggen sommige experts dat VR, AR en MR voor een volgende revolutie zullen zorgen.
Wat is het verschil tussen XR, AR, VR en MR?
Extended reality (XR) is de verzamelnaam voor VR, AR en MR.
Virtual reality (VR) is de techniek waarbij je niets meer ziet van de echte wereld om je heen. Je gebruikt daarvoor een VR-bril die aangesloten is op een smartphone of een computer, of een standalonebril die reageert op hoofdbewegingen. Virtual reality maakt het mogelijk om een 3D-wereld te simuleren die ons helemaal omsluit. Een goede virtualrealitybeleving probeert je ervan te overtuigen dat je er met je hele lichaam écht bent. De Google Cardboard, de Oculus van Facebook, HTC Vive en de Playstation VR-headset zijn voorbeelden van virtualrealitybeleving.
Bij augmented reality (AR) zie je nog steeds de echte wereld. Die wordt verrijkt met digitale beelden of extra informatie. Een van de bekendste AR-brillen was de Google Glass, maar de ontwikkeling daarvan staat nu op een laag pitje. De filters die je in Snapchat kan gebruiken, zijn ook een voorbeeld van augmented reality.
Mixed reality (MR) of gemengde werkelijkheid is de meest recente technologie waarbij het beeld niet zomaar over het normale zicht wordt geprojecteerd. De virtuele objecten lijken verankerd te zijn in de fysieke wereld. Zowel de digitale als de werkelijke elementen worden getoond. Een mixedrealitybril brengt de mogelijkheden van virtual reality en augmented reality een beetje bij elkaar. 3D-beelden worden geprojecteerd in de echte wereld. De HoloLens van Microsoft is een gekend voorbeeld.
Welke voordelen bieden deze technologieën voor onderwijs?
Kinderen zijn heel enthousiast als ze met VR of AR mogen experimenteren. Virtual reality kan helpen om het inlevingsvermogen van je leerlingen te ontwikkelen. In het onderwijs maken we de leerstof zo visueel mogelijk. Leerlingen onthouden beter wat ze beleefd hebben.
Soorten VR-brillen?
Er zijn drie verschillende types brillen op de markt:
- VR-brillen voor de smartphone,
- VR-brillen voor de computer,
- standalonebrillen.
Wat zijn de mogelijke drempels?
Sommige mensen krijgen last van fysieke ongemakken. De kwaliteit van de VR-bril speelt daarbij een grote rol. Een bril waarbij je de lenzen kan scherpstellen is hiervoor handig.
Daarnaast is er ook de factor gewenning, waardoor de fysieke ongemakken vanzelf verdwijnen. Anderen worden afgeschrikt door het mogelijke kostenplaatje. VR-brillen zijn er in alle prijsklassen, je vindt er dus zeker eentje binnen jouw budget. Nog anderen lijden aan technofobie, waardoor ze bang zijn van nieuwe technologieën en ze vermijden het gebruik ervan.
